About the Temple

In the small town of Chirayinkeezhu, between Attingal and Varkala in the north of Thiruvananthapuram district, stands the temple of Sarkara Devi – Bhadrakali, whom devotees of the area lovingly call Ponnammachi. Built in the Kerala style with a walled compound and a large tank, it is one of the most important goddess temples of southern Kerala and draws devotees from well beyond the district.

Sarkara is best known for its Kaliyoottu, a nine-day ritual drama in the month of Kumbham that re-enacts the battle between Bhadrakali and the demon Darika, ending with the 'ground fight' in the open field beside the temple. The ten-day Meena Bharani festival in March–April, with its procession of karas and arattu in the tank, is the other great occasion of the year. The temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board.

History & Aithihyam

Tradition explains the name with a story about jaggery (sarkara) traders. Merchants travelling the old road from Kollam to Thiruvananthapuram are said to have rested at this spot, and when they set off again one pot of jaggery could not be lifted. The sage Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, passing by, is believed to have recognised the presence of the goddess in the pot and to have had her installed here; the place and the goddess took their name from it.

The firm history begins with Travancore. Chirayinkeezhu belonged to the domain of the Attingal Ranis, and the temple's great Kaliyoottu is said to have been started in 1748 by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, who vowed the offering to the goddess before his campaign against Kayamkulam and fulfilled it after his victory. The festival was conducted under the Attingal Ranis with funds from the royal treasury, and families who trace their descent to retainers who came south with the Kolathunad princesses still take the roles of Kali, Darika and the other characters.

The Kaliyoottu follows a set sequence over nine days – the search for Darika in all directions, the blessing of devotees on the eighth day, and the final battle and beheading on the ninth – and is regarded as the most elaborate Kaliyoottu in southern Kerala. The Meena Bharani festival, starting with the flag-hoisting and ending with the arattu, has an old pallivetta hunt on its ninth day; animal sacrifice, once part of these rites, was given up long ago. The actor Prem Nazir, a native of Chirayinkeezhu, once gifted an elephant to the temple.
